Tales of Monkey Island-The trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood is the 4th episode in the graphic adventure series rough to us by Telltale Games.   Episode 4 was released on October 30th, 2009 and continues the story of Guybrush Threepwood as he continues his fight to cure the Voodoo Pox infecting all the pirates of the seas.

Story

When we last left our Heroic Pirate Guybrush Threepwood we were left with an uncertain outcome, he had been kidnapped and was being hauled off into the sunset with nary a resolution in site.  As we have come to notice with this Monkey Island series they have plenty of stories to tell and love leaving each episode with a cliffhanger.  Each cliffhanger has left us with a need for more Threepwood antics and Telltale games always come through.  This time Guybrush is returned to Flotsam Island and put on trial for a bunch of crimes he didn’t commit.  You must prove your innocence by solving puzzles so that you can continue your quest of cleansing the pox.  Those familiar with series know exactly what is at hand.

Gameplay

As I stated if you have played the previous 3 chapters or any 1 of them you know the drill.  You control Guybrush and must clear him of the accused crimes.   The puzzles are your standard fair for the series and neither improves upon nor drags down from previous installments.  They fit into the story well and only on occasion seem out of place.

As always you can control Guybrush by clicking or using the arrow keys or W,A,S,D.  How you move him is up to you but I suggest some sort of keyboard control as it allows for much more precise and consistent movement.

Graphics

As this is a Graphic adventure you might expect the graphics too be good, right?  Well they are of course.  The need for a big powerhouse computer is not necessary here and most computers made in the past few years will run this game and it will still look beautiful.  Rich colorful environments and characters bring this to the forefront among graphic adventure games and are just as enjoyable for others to watch as it is for you to play.

Overall

While the Tales of Monkey Island series is not breaking any new ground it is standing it’s ground well.  A consistent and enjoyable story and easy to manage controls help move the series beyond what these types of games have done in the past.  The story is engrossing and downright hilarious at points.   I don’t like episodic content for the most part but it seems to fit these types of games well.  I personally can’t wait for the 5th and final episode.

Pros

-Story is great

-Easy on the eyes

-Will run on most computers

Cons

-Short Game

-having to wait a month for the next episode
