Dante’s Inferno – Review – Xbox 360

Starting since the game’s achievements were named or rumored, there has been some controversy over the release of Visceral Games’ Dante’s Inferno. There is an achievement in the game for killing unbaptized babies; it is called “Bad Nanny.” The International Nanny Association complained that “that this type of play may promote violence towards children.” The other incident happened to be a trailer for the game being too… “Non-family friendly,” it seems the game’s slogan (Go To Hell) was too adult to air so they had to edit the commercial. Even though these have been some of the biggest news since it was announced, does this game lower its expectations because some people don’t like it? HELL NO!

Story: You play as Dante, a crusader in 1191, whose wife, Beatrice, who was tragically murdered. Your job is to go through the 9 stages of hell and bring her back and/or find out whom or what killed her.

Gameplay: The game is a 3rd person Hack & Slash. Like most games in the genre, Dante’s Inferno has a light and heavy attack. The Left Bumper holds powers that can be activated using the colored buttons. Each has a cool purpose, such as creating a shield around the character or a projectile. The camera is fixed behind you. In some cases it’s a burden as there are collectibles that are hard to find. The puzzles in the game take some getting used to but are fun. The levels are pretty straight forward and barely can fall to your death, though there are some holes where you can. Some of the jumps are outrageous and have to redo them a few times to finally make it. Bosses offer little resistance to your quest. Each has a health bar on-screen which helps. The game has ALOT of nudity in it. Though most of the nudity is repulsive, a twisted version of people’s anatomy. There also is alot of real time action sequences, where you have a limited time to press the right button or you will die or fail at your task. The most I have seen in a game really. There are collectibles in the game which net you achievements for finding coins, saving certain people, talking to your guide, and collecting relics. The relics were neatly hidden and some by the naked eye cannot be found.

Graphics/Sound: There are a lot of cool graphics they took some time detailing the way hell looks. From the naked bodies of the damned to the bosses, makes me wonder who dreams up these awesome images. Dante has a cross on his chest that turns into an anime type cutscene during flashbacks. Other cutscenes are just like movies. You can hear babies crying, people screaming, the whoosh of the scythe, people groaning. The motion of sound and graphics seem to be quite fluid.

Overall: If you want to see some weird stuff, hang out in hell, dance with the devil, play with dead, slice dice and maim everyone in sight, this is your game, it’s pretty cool!

Pros

* Cool Story Line
* Nice Graphics

Cons

* No Multiplayer
* 666 hit combo!
* Sick, twisted Nudity

Score: 8 out of 10
