God Of War III Review

Does chaos rise again or does Kratos’ fall from grace without Jaffe?

Ahem well where to begin. God Of War III, one of the most anticipated ps3 titles possibly ever since Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of the Patriots has finally arrived. Does it succeed? Fall? Well let me just get this out the way guys. God of war III, Obliterates the bar for any game in this genre and well in all honesty released. It is the most graphically impressive video game ever conceived in my personally opinion no game rivals how fucking impressive god of war really is. Videos, screenshots and trailers do this game no justice. Kratos IS the most graphically impressive character model ever created, I’d bet on that. No really. The Folks at Santa Monica have outdone themselves this game borderlines insanity at times, where you often remind yourself its a game and not something live action.. This game is phenomenal. There is no cut scenes nothing rendered out of game, everything you see and experience is using the INGAME engine there is nothing in God of War III that doesn’t use its actual game engine.

Now then taking into effect you haven’t been living under a rock or haven’t somehow heard of Kratos or the God Of War franchise, go buy the god of war collection right now its like $29.99CDN brand new for God of War 1 and 2 remastered in High definition. Two great games each with a platinum trophy, go buy it.

Anyways! God of war 3 picks up right where god of war 2 ends. Good ol’ awesome Kratos is on his quest to tear down Olympus bit by bit in his most masochistic moment ever. In all his violence, brutality and lack of fear or care for another. Kratos is on a quest with one single objective. To kill the God of Olympus, the all mighty, all powerful Zeus. After being betrayed by the Gods there is no talking, no forgiveness just blades and rending of the flesh no matter the cost. Kratos will have his revenge.

Now the core gameplay of course hasn’t change a whole lot but that is a good thing. Santa Monica did tweak with the mechanics they have just added more, and it pays off excellently. They have added a series of new weapons and each weapon has its own “magic” attached to it unlike the previous entries to the series. They have also added new platforming with a certain Gods prized possession, which ends up being a whole lot of fun and plays and is blended into combat almost perfectly!(AIR DASH FTW)

The combat system is the most fluid system to date there is TONS of variations and different combos plus the ability to string together different weapons into a combo is a whole lot of fun. Santa Monica did an excellent job at improving a near perfect combo system into a Legendary combo system, that does nothing but get better and better as the game progress and you level up you’re weapons. There is tons of different ways to kill enemies and Santa Monica has made it almost assured on any difficult, you can’t plow through the game with Square, Square, Triangle like God of War I and II. You really have to use the other weapons on different enemies, and really have to use the combos and not just mash buttons!

Now as for the boss battles and the sense of scale, well let me start off by saying this. The Boss fights in God Of War III are better than most full scale retail games, yes I just wrote that. Quote me, hell I’ll quote myself “The Boss fights in God Of War III are better then most full scale retail games” The boss fights in God of war III are so incredible and so well choreographed it is some of the best boss designs ever created, EVER. They are so fucking memorable it is simply breath taking. I cannot remember the last time a boss fight had me on my seat in shock and awe since the Mantis fights in MGS and MGS4.

The sense of scale in god of war franchise is one of the biggest things God of war III had to live up too, it blows you’re face off in a way no game has ever done. The sense of scale is unbelievable at times, it is so interesting. The game pulls off that if feels like it’s all connected and nothing is “separated” or “blocked off” everything is conjoined in one way or another, always.

Closing Comments and Final Thoughts

The Presentation: God of war III story comes together in a magnificent way from the opening credits(the best I’ve seen in a video game) until the ending credits, God Of War III is a non-stop action thrill ride that will have you’re jaw dropping at every corner and your eyes flickering in joy at what this game accomplishes.

Presentation: 10/10

The Graphics: God Of War III is the most graphically impressive game I have ever laid eyes on, ever yes I have experienced Crysis on ULTRA with the best PC gear money can buy(My cousin Efaco5′s powerhouse of awesome) God of war III takes the graphical bar and rips it in two and builds its own and raises it 1000feet above everyone else, while Kratos stands tall and tells other games to BRING IT ON. The new Graphical standard has been made.

Graphics: 10/10

The Sound: God Of War III possess one of the best video game soundtracks to date, once again yes I am bringing up Kojima’s masterpiece. God of war III soundtrack is almost as memorable as Metal gear solid 4 if not just as memorable. The sounds of Kratos’ blades swinging through the air. The chains clinging and slicing through flesh. Kratos’s voice acting is top notch, the casting behind the characters of God of War III are all top of the line some of the best acting I’ve heard since Uncharted 2.

Sound: 10/10

The Gameplay: God Of War III’s formula hasn’t changed much and that is a good thing it stays true to its roots and doing nothing but expanding on a almost perfect formula, the game always feels fresh and new every step of the way. There is never a dull moment in God Of War III, ever. Even on your second or third play-through the game will continue to blow you away with its graphical prowess and sheer awesome-ness(yes I just used awesome-ness)

Gameplay: 10/10

Final Comments

God Of War III is the most visually impressive game, I have ever played and quiet possibly the best game I have ever played. Santa Monica and Sony PlayStation have completed an amazing trilogy in a perfect fashion that most definitely deserves a perfect score, there really isn’t anything I can say bad about this game. There is so much reply value so I can’t even complain if its short. Which it really isn’t 10-15hours depending, Titan difficult doesn’t fuck around either. This is a game that will be remembered and compared to MANY games to come within its genre and outside of its genre.

If you do not own a PlayStation 3 and have ever considered buying one but haven’t God of War III alone is a reason enough to merit the purchase, even though I can name thousands of reasons to own a PS3. :) Trade in your 360 if you have to, just go play this game do not pass up God Of War III and the completion of Kratos’ tale.

Tell me what you guys think.

This was my first God of War game, a very impressive game I admit. I was really blown away by the sense of scale in this game. Some levels were simply mindblowingly awesome like the fight against Poseidon only to be trumped by the Kronos boss battle. Unfortunately I enjoyed the beginning and middle parts of the game more. The fight against Zeus was anticlimatic when it should have been the best fight ever in the game. I also hated that dam music puzzle. I don’t play any music games like Guitar Hero and Rock band and believe or not this puzzle gave me the most trouble in the entire game. It’s a stupid thing to add to the game IMO and if its existence was really necessary they should have made it into an optional mini-game puzzle you could skip. This was still a very impressive game but I beg to differ. Uncharted 2 is still IMO the best looking and playing game on the PS3.

    My score 9/10

Now I need to pick up the GOW Collection and play this franchise from the very beginning :)

God of War 3 is definitely the Game of The Year for 2010. Simply outstanding!

Peter L. What a whiny bitch, and what moron skips to the third game then plays backwards… It’s like reading a book back to front, retarded. If the music puzzle was too challenging perhaps you should play games more appropriate, i.e. something for 5 years olds. This game was perfect from start to finish, the Zeus fight was epic and it makes me vomit a little in my mouth on the rare occasion when I see someone foolishly say Uncharted 2 looks better… Nowhere near. Uncharted 2 looks average compared to GOW3, Uncharted 2 has crappy motion-blur & depth of field techniques, it runs at a lower frame-rate, is very inconsistent with texture quality which looks awful 70% of the time, has a much smaller scale and character models look like plastic texture-less dolls compared to GOW3… At least Uncharted 3 looks as good which you’d expect since it’s Naughty dogs 3rd PS3 game vs Sony santa monica’s 1st.
