Review of KrissX
A new Xbox Arcade titled KrissX(pronounced “Kriss-cross”) was released 1/27/2010 by Konami Digital Entertainment and developed by Blitz Arcade. This new word puzzle game is very stimulating for the brain, yet soothing for the mind. The gameplay is like a crossword puzzle where you have to unscramble the letters to make the correct word. You are given hints for the word, so if you’re good with anagrams, this is right up your alley.
There are several different gameplay modes and special puzzles to unlock as you go further. Quest Mode offers different varieties of gameplay, from your typical crossword style with intersecting columns and rows to a style where words are stacked across and letters are swapped up and down. Again there are hints given all the time with a little bubble that pops up when you hover over the row or column. This little bubble is sometimes a nuisance, due to the fact it covers over part of the word you’re going after. Some of the unlocks are enjoyable, like National Capitals, but I believe the challenge is somewhat missing with all the letters there filled out for you. There are also fun little bonuses after you complete a level. Little colored bubbles fall from the puzzle area , and you have to hit the associated color button on your controller to receive that prize amount.
I believe hard-core word puzzle gamers will find this title a little too easy, and there isn’t any multiplayer to help with the competitive players.
All in all I found this to be a descent addition to my arcade collection for a nice diversion from slash and mash games.
