Singularity – Review – Xbox 360

Imagine a game where you combine Resident Evil and Portal all into 1. You have just created a game from the developer who brought you Prototype.

Story: You play as Nathaniel Renko, a marine who is sent to a remote island off Russia, Katorga-12, because there is strange activity going on.  Upon arrival the helicopter and his squadmates are EMP’ed and lost.  It is your job to find out what happened to make it desolate waste land, using time travel to do so.

Gameplay: The game is a First-Person Shooter.  You have human weapons that you can use, along with ones that use E-99, the element that is abundant on the island.  E-99 also powers your TMD (Time Manipulation Device). Your TMD has a few different functions. Among them, fast forward/backwards allowing you to repair/destroy objects, including enemies,  to move through the game, Melee, a short burst of energy that replaces your old attack. Freeze which allows you to pass through things you couldn’t when time is running at normal speed.  Finally you can also use it to lift objects and throw them like the Portal Gun.  The controls are a little different then most FPS. To use the TMD, which is like a wrist rocket, you need to press the LB (L1), to fire, its the default RB (R1), to pick up and throw its R3, to pick up weapons its A (X). It doesn’t take very long to figure out them.  The enemies for the game include military personel, monsters that crawl on the ground, bigger monsters that attack on their feet, spider-like creatures, and mammoth ones like the ones you had to destroy in Prototype. They turn invisible at will since they are partially still alive. The TMD will turn them back visible if you fire the melee burst. D-Pad Down allows you to find your way if you are lost, giving you footsteps for a few seconds, so you have to pay attention quickly.

Sound/Graphics: Sound and graphics seem pretty stable in the game no real problems.  Some of the cool graphics for the game are when the transform phases (invisible to visible), firing the bubble to stop time turns the screen grey if you walk into it, and will protect you from enemies that want to come in.

Multiplayer: There are 2 different modes for multiplayer, Extermination and Team Death Match.  TDM is self-explanatory. Extermination is an Attack and Defend match where you try to control beacons on the map.

Overall: If you liked Prototype, this game is pretty much the same thing, except with time manipulation. It is fun.

Pros:

  • great game overall
  • good storyline
  • fun multiplayer

Cons:

  • harder difficulties get to be a pain redoing things

Score: 9 out 10
