RetroN 3 – Review – Hardware

A couple days ago I received a video game console from a company called Hyperkin. This console is called the RetroN 3. Whats really cool about the RetroN 3 is that it allows you to play old school catridge games from the Nintendo NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis. The only negative thing I’ve found with the console is that they give you a pair of basic InfraRed controllers that always have to be pointed towards the console. I found  this to be quite a drag but a really cool redeeming feature is that you can plug in two controllers for each system it supports. So if you want to play Super Mario World with your friend you can plug in two SNES controllers pop in the game and play. The best part about these old cartridge based games is that they can be found quite cheaply at local garage sales or pawn shops for a couple dollars. The system has the basic power and reset buttons located on the unit as well as a dial that allows you to pick which system you want to play. The build quality seems to be fair but it does not feel as solid as the original consoles it supports. Overall the RetroN 3 is priced at $70 which seems a little steep but considering you can pick up most of the games it supports for penny’s I find it to be well worth the price. If you would like to pick one up they are avaliable at these fine retailers http://hyperkin.com/index.php/retailer/
