Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep – Review – PSP

Donald Duck, Maleficent, Ventus, Aqua, Terra, and Mickey Mouse. All or some of these names you should be familiar with from your childhood or past gaming experience. If not, by the end of this saga you will!

Story: In each of us there is a little evil, the problem that we are facing is that it just needs to be awakened. Maleficent, the enemy from past games in the series is using this knowledge to steal the hearts of everyone in the universe.  That being said, the game is centered around 3 main characters, Ventus, Aqua, and Terra. You may play through the game once, but to get the full story to understand, you must play all 3.

Gameplay: The game is a free-form RPG. It has 3 modes of attack Regular, special, and D-Link. Dimension Link attacks allow you to connect to any  person you have connected to, such as the other 2 characters and Cinderella or Maleficent. There are 5 different difficulty levels. The higher the level, the better chance you will get the secret ending. As you defeat enemies you will gain XP, Munny, and any dropped items. The leveling system goes along the lines of the previous games and Final Fantasy series.  Your special attacks will also level up if you have them in your Command Menu.  There are 2 collectible items in the game.  You can collect crowns, which are called stickers, they add up in the menu and give you special items such as confetti and fireworks.  The others are chests, they have potions and other items in them.  There are multiple worlds around the universe map that you can travel to.  To unlock more you just need to complete a world by finishing the story part of it.  As you move around each world on the map, it shows how complete the world is.  If you still have a percent left, then just complete more of the story to level up your abilities because usually the rest of the items you need to find require you a higher jump or ability you do not have.

Sound/Graphics: The voice actors of the game include: Haley Joel Osment, Mark Hamill, James Woods, Hayden Panettiere , Jesse McCartney, Jennifer Hale, Quinton Flynn and Leonard Nimoy.  Being that Square-Enix developed the game. You are treated to superior graphics, sound and storylines.  Everything really seems fluid nothing to complain about.  The music was composed with a mixture between the Disney classical theme songs from the respective movies, and normal RPG type music.

Multiplayer: There are 4 types of multiplayer with the game, Versus (a deathmatch mode), Arena (Survival mode), Rumble Racing (racing mode with weapons), and Command Board (a board game type mode where whoever reaches the end first, wins)  Each mode supports up to 6 players, Locally.

Overall: If you like previous titles in the series, Disney and/or Square-Enix, or just RPG’s this is a must!

Pros:

  • Supreme graphics and sound
  • Cool Story line

Cons:

  • Replay a must
  • LONG cutscenes

Score: 9 out of 10
