THQ goes inSANE for New IP

In an optimistic move, THQ has announced a trilogy of games for a new horror-based IP. I say optimistic because not only are they “committing” to three games for a new IP, but they are also assuming that the world will still exist come 2013. Apparently Dennis Quaid’s Day After Tomorrow and John Cusacks’s 2012 didn’t convince THQ of the world’s impending doom…The games, which will be named under the inSANE monniker, are to be developed by Volition (Red Faction, Saints Row) along with film writer/director Guillermo del Toro serving as an external Creative Director.

AGOURA HILLS, Calif. – December 13, 2010 – THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) announced today it has entered into a multi-year agreement with Guillermo del Toro, writer and director of Hellboy and the Oscar-winning Pan’s Labyrinth, to create inSANE^TM, an original trilogy of triple-A games. To be developed by Volition, Inc.^®, inSANE will deliver an unprecedented cinematic experience while redefining storytelling in gaming. The first chapter in the series is expected to launch in 2013.

Del Toro will serve as external creative director for the games, working closely with THQ Executive Vice President, Core Games Danny Bilson, THQ Director of Fiction Development Paul DeMeo and THQ’s Volition, Inc. studio on the development of the trilogy. In addition, THQ and del Toro will collaborate on potential transmedia projects surrounding the inSANE games.

THQ will own the intellectual property rights to the inSANE games, and del Toro will hold the rights to any filmed entertainment products.
