Gamerskulls SG-1 – Hardware – Review

A few months back I was introduced to Gameskulls. Gameskulls is small company focused on providing gamers audio gear that provides quality sound and gives their heads a unique look. Gameskulls produces unique headset’s for the hardcore gamer called the GS-1. The real question is; is the GS-1 sturdy and strong enough to keep up with the lifestyle of the hardcore gamer?

First Impressions: Upon opening the rather plain box I was greeted by a faux velvet bag and inside is one of the most unique headsets you will ever lay your eyes on. Most people look at the headset and cannot help themselves from laughing. Though upon a closer examination you quickly learn this isn’t some gag gift but a proper headset made with quality materials. Another item of humor is the instruction guide telling you to keep a watchful eye of those behind you or around you. In the guide it refers to helmets featuring sharp points. I assume from this statement they will make helmets in the future with spikes and sharp edges that will look even more extreme than the GS-1.

Build Quality: The helmet itself is made of a very sturdy and thick plastic material. Metal rivets hold the mic and speakers in place. The speakers themselves are of decent quality and look just as sturdy as the helmet itself. I don’t expect anyone to have any problems with this headset falling apart during normal gameplay like other headsets on the market.

Functionality: The headset performs exactly like Gameskulls describes. It’s a hardy headset providing gamers a unique look and the opportunity to have a great headset that offers great sound and provides a means to chat with your teammates. The headset itself can be adjusted for varying head sizes and fits snugly. This headset even works for people that wear glasses. The headset does not apply pressure to the ears like most other headsets do but rather fits your head firmly but not to the point of discomfort.

Usability: The headset itself is based upon a standard PC headset with headphone and mic cord. The quality of the sound is fairly good and with the snugly fitting helmet you can barely hear any external noise which is always nice for large loud environments or loud households. With the helmet covering your entire head you almost feel invulnerable and it immdeiatly affects your gameplay style. I also received an accessory kit that allows you to use the headset on an Xbox 360. The only problem with the approach they offer is very limiting. You receive an extended headphone cable that needs to be plugged into your sound system. The only problem is if you don’t have a sound system or TV that has access to a headphone jack for sound you won’t be able to use the headset for anything other than chat. You are also forced to tinker with your chat settings on the Xbox itself so you can hear your teammates.

Overall: The Gameskulls GS-1 is a nice approach to offering gamers a unique piece of gaming hardware. The headset can be easily customizable and with the cost of the headset at $49.95 you won’t feel bad about painting it or adding attachments like horns or other accessories. You can also buy the helmets in lots of 3 or 5 saving between $15 and $50. If you want something unique and will make you stand out I really would suggest picking up one of these headsets. Heck who knows in the future they may offer Viking helmets to those who want them. You can check out Gameskulls at gameskulls.com
