Sideway: New York – Review – PSN

Story: Playing as Nox a young New York City graffiti artist you are transported into the world of Sideway after your girlfriend is kidnapped. Once in the world of Sideway you must traverse and tag your way through some old school platforming to stop the evil villian Spray and save your lady friend.

Gameplay: Old school platform fans need apply here. This game is a great nod to the yesteryear of platforming games with a fresh twist. While exploring the world of Sideway you are limited to being a piece of graffiti on a brick wall/walls. Every jump you make will turn with said wall so jump too high in some areas and end up flat on the roof or too far and end up around the side of the building. This mechanic takes a little getting used to and needs to be perfected to get all of the games secret items and pickups. One downside is some enemies are unforgiving and with a limited health bar you will perish many times, but that just adds in to the old school platforming style.

Graphics/Audio: Graffiti has always been an art style I have liked and admired. With that said the people behind this game must be in love with the graffiti style cause Sideway: New York oozes it everywhere. Characters, pickups, enemies and even the music are graffiti inspired. Mix in that with cel shaded graphics and Sideway is one of the prettier games on the system. Music in Sideway is an upbeat hip hop tone that never really shows much diversity. While many of you may think this is a good thing, it is not, beats are overused and just remixed with different lyrics this really took me out of the otherwise immersive world.

Overall: Being a platforming fan i really enjoy this fresh yet old school approach to the genre. Sideway will give you a challenge will wowing you visually. All fans of platforming or stylish games should give Sideway: New York a playthrough. It measures up as one of the better PSN games to be released lately.

Pros:
-fun platforming
-awesome art style
-easy to pick up and play

Cons:
-soundtrack is terrible
-platforming can get frustrating
