Gears of War 3: Horde Command Pack DLC – Review – Xbox 360

Epic has released the first of the planned downloadable content for Gears of War 3. This one focuses mainly on improving Horde by adding three new maps and other additions. Blood Drive makes it’s return along with Azura and Rustlung. Each map offers a wholly different experience. From the up close and personal feeling of Blood Drive to the long lines of sight in Azura, every player will find what they are looking for here.

The content also includes two new weapon skins, Team Plasma being my favorite of the two, along with three new multiplayer characters: Big Rig Dizzy, Bernie Mataki, and Onyx Guard.

The improvements to Horde include the addition of the Command Center which allows you to call in sniper, mortar, and Hammer of Dawn strikes, respectively. The Silverback can now be upgraded even further to include rockets, the decoy can now be maxed out to turn into an Onyx Guard that will assist you in the fight, and sentries can now be upgraded to shoot fire bolts which are particularly helpful against Armored Kantus’ and Beserkers.

Rustlung may be so so, but Azura and Blood Drive are certainly fun to play in Horde mode and will be even more fun when they are added to the online multiplayer.

The map descriptions are below.

• Blood Drive – The Jacinto Medical Plaza was overwhelmed by evacuated citizens after the government-sanctioned Hammer Strikes, and the ensuing riots quickly turned this safe haven into a dangerous inferno. An abundance of high ground and funneled choke points make this map a returning favorite to Horde.
• Rustlung – Once the pride of the Royal Tyran Navy, the foredecks of this decommissioned battleship are now riddled with bullet holes. Any team with the fortitude to hold the exposed central torpedo bay will find that the ship’s Loader has been replaced with a battle-ready Silverback mech suit.
• Azura – This island resort was once the exclusive domain of Sera’s educated elite, but the tranquil water gardens and lush foliage have become a hotly contested combat zone. Dual snipers overlook a powerful explosive weapon, while the defensive central platform may be your last resort of retreat.
