Fusion Genesis – Review – XBLA
Space the final frontier, we have heard this a million times. Space has also been the backdrop for many epic space RPGs, but never have they been done like this. Fusion Genesis resurrects the free form space exploration game and does it better then any before it.
Story: Working for a mad scientist is never easy, but it is even worse working for a mad scientist IN SPACE! Fusion Genesis starts off with you doing just that, working for a mad scientist. You are quickly thrown into the middle of an intergalactic space opera that in terms of depth is up there with the big guns in space RPGS. The reason for the vagueness is because Fusion Genesis is a game in which you shape your own story. After the initial few missions with your mad scientist employer your free to go on your own.
Gameplay: Like Geometry Wars? Like Mass Effect? Like Fun? This game is for you. At the core Fusion Genesis is a dual-stick shooter RPG. It also goes back to free form space exploration roots of early 90′s pc games like Wing Commander:Privateer and Solar Winds. Starting out you are free to do what you want. Find a faction and do some quests or dive into mining for minerals, maybe neither of those are your thing then go and tackle the main story line. The customization options for ships are immense with cloaking devices and barrel roll upgrades just scratching the surface, and yes I had to add barrel roll for obvious reasons.
Graphics/Audio: Deep space has never looked so pretty in terms of a top down shooter. Fusion Genesis gives you the feeling of being in a true futuristic space age. Gone are the days of just a star pattern backdrop and now we are welcomed with anything from exploding ships to a beautiful space station. Ships are also rendered in high detail and with all the detail even from an arcade title I never once experienced any frame rate issues. One of the flaws I have come to find in the game is the soundtrack, it is just very run of the mill for me. It does give off the space epic feel but it just feels like the same space sounds we have become accustomed to since Star Wars. The soundtrack is just a minor issue and doesn’t detract from the gameplay or immersion at all.
Overall: Fusion Genesis is a great game, but I feel it will suffer from a few setbacks in term of people getting a chance to play it. First it came out at the worst possible time, alongside Call of Duty. It also had no marketing at all, I didn’t even know about it until I was given my review copy. I have told all my friends to check it out and they love it. If your a fan of space epics or dual-stick shooters you NEED to play this game. You should also tell some friends about it so we can hopefully see more installments to the franchise or other games in the same vein.
Pros:
-Amazing customization
-Sprawling story (40+ hours,co-op)
-PvP
-Only $10 !!!!!!
Cons:
-Menu system
-Lack of direction early may push away gamers
-Generic soundtrack
8 out of 10
