Skyrim Lore – The Eras – The Mythic Era
Things You Should Know About the Elder Scrolls Lore
The Eras
The Mythic Era
The most prominent belief of how the we came to be, states that the world was created by the Gods, who discussed how they should do this in the great Adamantine Tower – a structure which still stands today on the island of Balfiera, between High Rock and Hammerfell in the Iliac Bay. Here the Gods created Mundus – the realm that encompasses all we live in – and Nirn – the planet which Tamriel is located.
At the beginning, there was no prominent intelligent species, instead all that our planet gave life to was the Hist trees in Black Marsh, the land of the Argonians, who soon followed. The Khajiit were likely next along with other “beast folk.”
In what is known as the Mythic Era, the Aldmer emerged from a mysterious land called Aldmeris and settled on Summerset Isle. As they spread eastward, the Nedic people emigrated from Atmora from the north into Skyrim.
Because of their differing environments, the Mer began to change into different races. The Altmer (High Elves) remained on Summerset Isle, the Bosmer (Wood Elves) were located in Valenwood, the Chimer (Dark Elves) and Dwemer inhabited Morrowind with its great Red Mountain while the Ayleid lived in Cyrodiil. As mentioned before, for some amount of time the Falmer existed in Skyrim but they were quickly eliminated from a prominent existence. At one location, High Rock, the Aldmer and Nedic intertwined to create the Bretons. The Orisimor (Orcs) were also created through the spitefulness of their leader who became the Daedric Prince Malacarth.
The Nedic people changed much less. Those in Skyrim became known as Nords, a people hardened by the bitter cold. Those who crossed south into Cyrodiil became slaves to the Ayleid.
The two initially met in the land of Skyrim where the Nords befriended the Falmer (Snow Elves). Over time, the Falmer realized that the rapidly expanding Nedic population was becoming a threat to the Mer. The Falmer began hunting down settlements of Nedes as they came to Tamriel. This changed when Ysgramor and his two sons arrived. They escaped on the last ship back to Atmora which had changed into a peaceful land. Ysgramor and his sons spread word of an evil species of Elves who wanted to destroy all of man kind on Nirn. With what became known as the Five Hundred Companions, Ysgramor brought an army of men, slaughtering the Falmer, and giving man a solid foothold on Tamriel. This would allow for the eventual creation of the Empire.
The Five Hundred Companions forced the Falmer into Solstheim, an island northwest of Vvardenfell. Other Falmer sought refuge with the Dwemer of Skyrim. The Dwemer agreed to protect them, but did not trust them. Part of the agreement made the Falmer consume a toxic fungus. This made them blind and left them completely at the mercy of their rulers. They became servants, and then slaves to their overseers. Eventually, the species would rebel, but with the disappearance of the Dwemer during the next era, the Falmer were left in the dark.
